The third island we visited on our Greek holiday was the most spectacular. The island is actually the caldera remaining from a huge eruption about 3500 years ago that destroyed the Minoan civilization. The towns are built on the rim of the standing portions of the crater. This is like a large version of Crater Lake, but with the Mediterranean flooding in through the destroyed areas of the caldera wall.
